What is manual welding?

Manual welding is a technology used extensively at LaserNett that joins metal of various materials, shapes and configurations together to form a strong bond between them.

Welding is a metal fabrication process that joins metals together through a process called coalescence. Coalascence is a process that’s accomplished by melting metal work pieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten material that cools and binds together to make a strong joint.

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, is a manual welding process that uses a nonconsumable tungsten electrode, an inert or semi-inert gas mixture and a separate filler material. TIG welding is extremely useful and is a process typically used when welding thin materials. This method of manual welding is characterized by a stable arc and high quality welds, but it requires significant operator skill and can only be accomplished at relatively low speeds.

Metal inert gas (MIG) welding, is a semi-automatic or automatic process that combines two metals by using a filler wire with a current to produce the electrode. Inert gas is also used simultaneously to protect the weld from any air contaminants. MIG welders use a trigger to dispense the wire that is fed from a spool to the weld joint. The welder controls the process of feeding the small electrode or wire continuously and semi-automatically. MIG welding can be used on all thicknesses of steels, aluminum, nickel and stainless steel.

Spot welding is a manual welding method used to join overlapping metal sheets of up to 3 mm thick. Two electrodes are simultaneously used to clamp the metal sheets together and to pass current through the sheets. The advantages of this method of welding include efficient energy use, limited workpiece deformation, high production rates, easy automation, and no required filler materials. Weld strength is significantly lower than with other welding methods, making the process suitable for only certain applications.

What is sheet metal bending?

Sheet metal bending (or press braking) is a technology used extensively at LaserNett that allows the shaping and bending of sheet metal.

As the oldest mechanical metal deformation processes, the process begins by placing a piece of metal to be bent into the press brake. A hydraulic ram is raised and the metal to be bent is slid into place. Press brake shoes are lowered to which force is applied to this sheet of metal causing it to bend at an angle and formed to a desired shape. The brake press can bend something as small as a bracket to something as large as a metal enclosure or chassis.

When press brake bending a piece of metal, there is a buildup of residual stresses in the material which will cause a bent piece of metal to spring back. Due to this elastic recovery of material, it is necessary to slightly over-bend the metal piece to achieve the desired bend radius and bend angle.

Reasons why to use LaserNett’s metal bending service:

  • Very cost effective
  • Great for small and large run metal fabrication and prototypes
  • Extremely accurate

What is laser engraving?
Laser engraving is a technology used extensively at LaserNett that allows the engraving of photos, text and logos onto a large variety of materials.

Laser engraving is a process where a laser is used to engrave and cut varying materials. It is a process where an image or logo is engraved or cut into an object by removing approximately up to 1mm of the surface using an extremely precise laser light.

As the name suggests, “Laser engraving” uses a high-intensity laser light that is computer controlled and directed onto your project providing high levels of precision and detail. The engraving process is very technical and complex in nature. Despite this complexity, laser engraving is very precise and can be completed at a high rate. Engraving is completed with no physical contact with your project’s surface.
Shading is not possible with laser engraving. All art must be provided in black and white.

Reasons why to use LaserNett’s laser engraving service:

  • Very cost effective
  • Capable of etching 3D images into many materials
  • Non-contact process, great for fragile materials
  • Photographic images can be engraved
  • Very high levels of details

What is laser cutting?

Laser cutting is a fast, cost-effective technology used extensively at LaserNett to cut various materials. Lasers are used to melt, burn and/or vaporize material while an assist gas is used to “clear” the cutting area of a burnt and molten material.

Laser cutting is a proven technology and has been used industrially since the late 60’s. CO2 lasers are suited primarily for cutting, boring and engraving on a multitude of materials. Lasers are able to cut through mild steel, aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, paper, plastics, wood and fabrics. LaserNett’s lasers are used to bore, scribe, cut and engrave.

The laser cutting process is complex but basically, involves initially pre-piercing your cutting material outside the desired cut. The heat of the laser quickly increases as it is moved into the desired cutting area. An assist gas is then used to remove heated material and a cut is produced. Depending on the type of material being cut, varying types of assist gases are used. Oxygen is used with carbon steel, Nitrogen for non-ferrous steels/non-metals and Argon for titanium.

Reasons why to use LaserNett’s laser cutting service:

  • Very high levels of cutting accuracy
  • Laser cut a high level of detail
  • Repeatability and consistency
  • Can cut through a wide variety of materials
